In a world filled with doubt and uncertainty, many Christians struggle with questions about their faith. One of the most searched questions among believers is “How do I know that I am really saved?” This uncertainty isn’t new—it plagued the early church just as it does today. Through 1 John 5:6-13, we discover that God provides clear evidence for our faith that goes far beyond our feelings.
Why Do Christians Doubt Their Salvation?
Doubt creeps into our hearts for many reasons. We measure our lives against Scripture and realize we fall short. We listen to conflicting voices and teachings that produce uncertainty. Some wonder if they lose their salvation when they sin, or if God will judge them for how they live. The early church faced similar struggles. False teachers called Gnostics claimed special knowledge was needed for salvation. Jewish teachers insisted on earning one’s way to heaven through good works. These competing messages left believers confused and uncertain about their standing with God.
Faith Stands on Facts, Not Feelings
The key to overcoming doubt is understanding that our faith stands on facts, not feelings. As Jeremiah 17:9 reminds us, “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it?” Our feelings can change in a moment, but facts remain constant. The assurance of our salvation comes from God’s Word, not our emotional state. Christian faith isn’t built on feelings or experiences, though we may have wonderful ones. It’s built on testimony and rock-solid evidence that shows when we put our faith in Jesus Christ, our salvation is secure.
God’s Three Witnesses: Water, Blood, and Spirit
The Water: Jesus’ Baptism
When Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist, two significant things happened. A dove descended from heaven representing the Holy Spirit, and God’s audible voice declared, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased” (Matthew 3:17 ESV). Jesus didn’t need baptism for himself, but He identified with us as human beings. This event provides evidence because heaven opened and God spoke, confirming Jesus’ identity as His Son.
The Blood: Jesus’ Sacrifice
The blood of Jesus shed on the cross represents where sin was judged and salvation was secured. This wasn’t a spiritual metaphor—it was real blood from a real person who took our place as our substitute. John, as an eyewitness who leaned against Jesus at the Last Supper, testified that Jesus came in real flesh and blood. This was crucial because false teachers claimed Jesus was only a spirit, which would make His sacrifice meaningless.
The Spirit: The Holy Spirit’s Testimony
“‘But when the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father, he will bear witness about me'” (John 15:26 ESV). The Holy Spirit bears witness to Jesus Christ and works in our hearts during regeneration—the transformation from our old self to our new self in Christ.
No Fence-Sitting Allowed
Only Two Responses Exist
There’s no middle ground when it comes to Jesus Christ. You either believe or you don’t believe. Sitting on the fence isn’t an option because uncertainty breeds doubt and fear. “‘Whoever believes in the Son of God has the testimony in himself. Whoever does not believe God has made him a liar, because he has not believed in the testimony that God has borne concerning his Son'” (1 John 5:10 ESV).
Unbelief Calls God a Liar
This may sound harsh, but it’s honest. When someone gives you their word and you refuse to believe them, you’re questioning their character. God has spoken clearly about His Son. The only question is whether you’ll take Him at His word. Jesus said it plainly: “‘Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God'” (John 3:18 ESV).
God Transforms the Unlikely
Many people feel unworthy of God’s love, thinking they need to clean up their lives before coming to Him. This is false. God accepts anyone at any point as long as they’re breathing. He proved this when He told the thief on the cross, “‘Today you will be with me in paradise'” (Luke 23:43 ESV). You may feel like you’re on the scrap pile, but God specializes in transforming the unlikely into something beautiful. It takes a little heat, a little fire, and His grace to create something wonderful from what seems worthless.
Having the Son Means Having Life
“‘Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life'” (1 John 5:12 ESV). This isn’t just about avoiding hell—it’s about abundant life now and eternal life forever. Those who have Jesus experience love, peace, joy, and hope. They have a positive outlook because they know God will take care of them here and they’ll live with Him for eternity. This life is more than just breathing—it’s the Holy Spirit working in us, doing what we can’t do on our own.
God’s Purpose: Certainty, Not Doubt
“‘I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life'” (1 John 5:13 ESV). God’s stated purpose is for you to have certainty about your salvation. He doesn’t want you living in perpetual doubt about your eternal destination. If you’ve genuinely trusted Christ, you have life. Period. God said it, and God doesn’t lie.
Life Application
This week, challenge yourself to base your assurance of salvation on God’s facts rather than your feelings. When doubt whispers, point back to the three witnesses: Jesus’ baptism (the water), His sacrifice (the blood), and the Holy Spirit’s testimony in your heart. Stop sitting on the fence about your relationship with Jesus. Either believe God’s testimony about His Son or reject it—but recognize that rejection calls God a liar. If you’ve been trying to earn your way to God or waiting until you’re “good enough,” remember that Jesus accepts you right now, just as you are. Ask yourself these questions: – Am I basing my assurance of salvation on my feelings or on God’s Word? – Have I truly believed in Jesus Christ as God’s Son, or am I still sitting on the fence? – Do I experience the abundant life that comes from having the Son, or am I just going through religious motions? – When doubt creeps in, do I turn to God’s testimony or rely on my emotions? Remember, God wants you to have certainty about your faith and your future. Trust His testimony about Jesus, and experience the life He offers both now and for eternity.
