In a world where the definition of manhood has become increasingly blurred, the Bible provides clear standards for what makes a godly man. While some in society champion superficial traits like beards or “manly” activities, God’s focus is on character, consistency, and self-control. The book of Titus offers timeless wisdom about God’s design for men who lead their families and churches with integrity.
What does it mean to be a spiritual son?
The first characteristic of a godly man is that he recognizes himself as a spiritual son. Paul refers to Titus as “my true child in a common faith,” indicating their spiritual father-son relationship. For men to be godly, they must submit to God as their heavenly Father.
This can be challenging for those who had difficult relationships with their earthly fathers. However, understanding God as a loving, gracious, and caring Father—not one who constantly points out faults—is essential to spiritual growth.
Titus was a 100% Gentile convert with no Jewish background, yet he had something invaluable: hope in eternal life. This hope came from “God who never lies” and was revealed to him through Paul’s preaching. Despite modern claims that preaching is outdated, there remains tremendous power in the preached Word of God.
How do godly men bring order?
The second quality Paul mentions is that godly men bring order. He instructed Titus to “put what remained into order and appoint elders in every town.” Throughout history, God has designed men to bring order—first in their homes, then in the church, and ultimately in their communities.
This doesn’t mean ruling with an iron fist. Rather, men bring order through their character and consistency. They are designed as protectors and providers. When men bring order to their homes, order in the church often follows.
What does it mean to be above reproach?
Godly men live above reproach. The word “reproach” indicates disgrace or dishonor, so being “above reproach” means living in such a way that you cannot be accused of wrongdoing.
This begins with the work Jesus does in our hearts. When we have a faith-filled relationship with Christ, He has already made us “holy and blameless and above reproach before him” (Colossians 1:22). From this position, God continues His sanctifying work in our lives.
Being above reproach includes:
- Being a “husband of one wife” – faithful and loving to your spouse
- Leading your children well – setting an example of faith and godly character
- Creating an atmosphere where your family wants to follow Jesus
How are godly men good stewards?
Paul describes an overseer as “God’s steward” who must not be “arrogant or quick-tempered or a drunkard or violent or greedy for gain.” A steward is a manager, and the theme of stewardship is consistency.
Godly men are good stewards in their homes—not just financially providing, but being present, engaged, and responsible. Unlike previous generations where men might have seen their role as solely financial providers, biblical stewardship encompasses all aspects of family life.
Good stewardship is the opposite of arrogance, greed, and violence. It reflects a man who is loving, gracious, and compassionate—qualities that require great strength, not weakness.
How do godly men demonstrate spiritual fruit?
Paul describes godly men as “hospitable, a lover of good, self-controlled, upright, holy and disciplined.” These qualities reflect the spiritual fruit growing in a man’s life.
A “lover of good” has a desire for justice and to protect those who are wronged. Self-control means not giving in to excess. Together, these qualities demonstrate a growing relationship with Jesus Christ.
Godly men never stop growing spiritually. They continue allowing God to teach them, increasing in knowledge of God’s Word, and trusting Him in new situations. This growth—whether pleasant or painful—is always beneficial because our loving Father does what’s best for us.
How do godly men uphold God’s Word?
Finally, a godly man “must hold firm to the trustworthy word as taught, so that he may be able to give instruction in sound doctrine and also to rebuke those who contradict it.”
Holding God’s Word high means:
- Making Scripture a priority
- Relying on and trusting the Bible
- Placing it above worldly wisdom
- Living according to its teachings
Godly men use Scripture to instruct their families, churches, and workplaces. Even when they don’t directly quote Bible verses, their logic and words flow from God’s Word living in them.
They also use Scripture as the basis for correction and rebuke. The Bible shows us how to correct our children when they’re not doing something right.
Life Application
In these challenging times, there is a tremendous need for godly men in our churches and families. God is calling men to rise up and take their place—to be who He designed them to be rather than taking the “escape hatch” that previous generations have taken by deferring spiritual leadership to women.
Ask yourself these questions:
- Am I embracing my identity as a spiritual son of God?
- How am I bringing godly order to my home and relationships?
- Are there areas of my life where I’m not above reproach?
- How can I be a better steward of what God has entrusted to me?
- What spiritual fruit is evident in my life, and what areas need growth?
- Do I truly hold God’s Word in high regard, both in knowledge and application?
If you begin applying these godly characteristics—God’s design for your life—you will see radical transformation within a year. Allow God to work in you, raising you to His standard for godly manhood, and watch how He transforms every area of your life, marriage, family, and church.
