In our modern world, we’re bombarded with spiritual messages, teachings, and voices claiming to speak truth. From social media influencers to celebrity testimonies, from progressive theology to prosperity gospel, how can we know what’s truly from God? The apostle John, writing as an elderly father figure to believers, provides crucial guidance in 1 John 4:1-6 on how to test the spirits and discern truth from deception.

Why Testing the Spirits Matters More Than Ever

John wrote his epistle during a time when false teachers and false prophets were infiltrating the church. As the last living apostle, he served as a pastor to the church at Ephesus and the surrounding region, addressing the urgent need for spiritual discernment. Today, this message is perhaps more relevant than ever, as false teachings seem to be increasing both inside and outside the church.

The reality is that spiritual deception is real and comes in many forms. Many false teachers will appear Christian – that’s their intent. They use biblical language, share personal testimonies about their faith background, and speak in ways that sound spiritual. But as believers, we cannot rely on feelings or surface-level impressions to determine truth.

What Does It Mean to Test the Spirits?

When John tells us to “test the spirits,” he’s acknowledging that not every spiritual experience or teaching comes from God. The phrase “spirits” is plural, indicating there are multiple spiritual influences at work – and not all of them are from God.

Preparing Ourselves for Spiritual Discernment

Before we can effectively test spirits, we must prepare ourselves spiritually. According to 1 John 3:24, this preparation involves three key elements:

  • Keeping God’s commandments – Living in obedience to Scripture
  • Abiding in Jesus Christ – Remaining close to Him through prayer, worship, and study
  • Being filled with the Holy Spirit – Allowing God’s Spirit to guide and convict us

The closer we are to Jesus, the stronger our spiritual discernment becomes. The Holy Spirit acts like a warning system, giving us that sense when something isn’t right – whether it’s a feeling in our gut, hair standing up on our neck, or simply a “that doesn’t make sense” reaction.

The Primary Test: What Do They Believe About Jesus?

John provides a clear, decisive test for spiritual discernment: “Every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, and every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God” (1 John 4:2-3).

Why Jesus Coming “In the Flesh” Matters

This isn’t just theological nitpicking – it’s essential to our salvation. Jesus coming in the flesh means:

  • He became truly human while remaining fully God
  • He could serve as our substitute on the cross
  • He actually died for our sins and was physically resurrected
  • His sacrifice was real and effective

In John’s time, the Gnostics denied that Jesus came in the flesh because they despised physical matter and elevated only the spiritual. Today, we see similar errors in various forms – some deny Jesus’ divinity, others question His humanity, and still others reject the reality of His death and resurrection.

Questions to Ask When Testing Spiritual Teaching

When evaluating any spiritual teacher or teaching, ask these key questions:

  • Do they believe Jesus is fully God?
  • Do they believe He became fully human?
  • Do they believe He was born of a virgin?
  • Do they believe He performed the miracles recorded in Scripture?
  • Do they believe He actually died on the cross for our sins?
  • Do they believe He physically rose from the dead?

If the answers to any of these questions are no or unclear, you’re dealing with false teaching influenced by the spirit of antichrist.

The Spirit of Antichrist

John warns about “the spirit of the antichrist” – not referring to the end-times political figure, but to any spiritual influence that opposes the true Jesus and offers a substitute. The devil doesn’t mind if people know, love, or pray to Jesus – as long as it’s a false Jesus who cannot save them.

This spirit both opposes the true Christ and provides alternatives. It’s why we see so many “Jesus-flavored” teachings that sound Christian but ultimately lead people away from biblical truth.

You Already Have What You Need

Here’s the encouraging truth: if you’re a believer in Jesus Christ, you already possess everything needed to discern and defend against false spirits. John reminds us, “Little children, you are from God and have overcome them, for he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world” (1 John 4:4).

The Power of the Indwelling Spirit

As a child of God, you have incredible privileges:

  • Protection – No weapon formed against you can prosper
  • Inheritance – You share in God’s family inheritance
  • Transformation – You’re being shaped into Christ’s likeness
  • Spiritual Equipment – The Holy Spirit provides discernment and power

You don’t need to be a brilliant apologist or theologian to detect false teaching. The Holy Spirit living in you provides the discernment you need. You are more than a conqueror through Christ who loved you.

Who’s Listening to Your Message?

John provides one final test: observe who receives your message about Jesus. “We are from God. Whoever knows God listens to us, and whoever is not from God does not listen to us” (1 John 4:6).

This doesn’t mean everyone will immediately accept the gospel, but it does mean that those whose hearts are open to God will be receptive to biblical truth. Don’t be discouraged when people reject your witness – it often reveals the condition of their heart rather than the validity of your message.

Standing Firm in a Culture That Silences Truth

We live in a society increasingly hostile to Christianity. The darkness hates the light, and there’s a growing effort to silence Christian voices. But John encourages us not to stop talking about Jesus, even when people aren’t listening.

As we approach the end times, false teachings will only increase. Christians must be prepared, equipped with God’s Word and led by His Spirit, to discern truth from error and stand firm in biblical faith.

Life Application

This week, commit to strengthening your spiritual discernment by drawing closer to Jesus through His Word and prayer. When you encounter spiritual teaching – whether from a book, podcast, social media, or conversation – apply the tests John provides. Ask yourself: What does this teaching say about Jesus Christ? Does it align with Scripture? What is the Holy Spirit telling you about it?

Consider these questions for personal reflection:

  • How well do I know what the Bible teaches about Jesus Christ?
  • Am I abiding closely enough in Christ to have strong spiritual discernment?
  • When I share my faith, how do people respond, and what might that reveal?
  • Am I prepared to lovingly but firmly reject false teaching, even from people I care about?

Remember, truth will always triumph over error in the end. Your job is to stay close to Jesus, know His Word, and trust the Holy Spirit’s guidance as you navigate an increasingly deceptive spiritual landscape.
