What is the Purpose of Being a Disciple?
What is the purpose of being a disciple? For the last few weeks, I have been writing about what it means to be a disciple of Jesus Christ. Today I want to discuss the purpose of it all. Why should we pursue it? Some will tell you the purpose of being a disciple is to become more like Jesus, and they wouldn’t be wrong. Others would quote the Great Commission in Matthew 28:19 and declare that disciples are to make other disciples. While this is true and should be the result of becoming like Jesus, it is not the main purpose. The main purpose of becoming a disciple is to fall deeper in love with Jesus. We practice spiritual disciplines to become less like the world and more like Jesus, and that, in turn, should create a fire inside of us to help others on that journey. If we are doing all of that and growing cold in our love for Jesus, it is all in vain. The church of Ephesus was guilty of that. On the outside, they looked like model Christians, but they lost their love for Jesus. Discipleship’s purpose isn’t to accomplish good causes; it is to grow our heart closer to Jesus.
Youth Summer Kickoff
The Youth Summer Kickoff last night was a huge success. There were kids all over the amphitheater area. A huge thanks to Abel and Angelina Ortega and their team. They did a great job. Coastal Dogs came out and fed everyone, although I think the youth only drank the Boba drinks and ate churros. So many new teens were reached with the Gospel.
Hope Sunday
Hope Sunday is a week away. We are turning it into a 250th birthday party for our nation. Make sure to wear your patriotic clothing. There will be BBQ, games, and Baptism. Everyone is invited, and we encourage you to invite those close to you. If you are interested in getting baptized or have questions about it, I will be having a meeting in the sanctuary right after each service this Sunday. You will find out what baptism means, what is going to happen, and answer any questions you might have.
Upcoming Events
This Saturday our Run and Mountain Bike clubs are meeting to run and ride. Running club meets at the church at 7:30 AM. Mountain Bike club meets at Pastor Chuck’s house at 10 AM. Sunday is Father’s Day, and we have a special treat for the Dads. Dry Co Jerky is supplying bags to all the Fathers. Sorry, one bag per dad. We will continue our study through Revelation by looking at the church of Ephesus in Revelation 2:1-7.
That’s it for now. See you Sunday.
